Council to send out sms-based dieting tips

MORE than 500 obese people have signed up to a £10,000 council scheme in which they receive texts urging them to lose weight.

Motivational messages such as “Why not walk to the shops more often?” and “Eat slightly smaller portions” will be sent.

Advice issued to their smartphones will also include: “Keep a check on snacks and drinks.”

The scheme is being funded by the council in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, which has one of the worst obesity rates in Britain.

More than 70,000 adults in the city and a quarter of children aged 10 to 11 are clinically obese, a problem which costs the local NHS more than £50million a year.
